The most important link between you and the fish is your line. Whether it is monofilament, copolymer, fluorocarbon, or braided fishing line, proper storage can greatly prolong the life and ensure maximum strength and performance of your fishing lines.

Treat All Lines the Same

Although some line may be less affected by environmental factors, it is a good idea to treat all line types the same. Caring for all types of line in the same manner will only make things less complicated, by allowing you to keep and store all your different spools in the same container and area, instead of separating them by type.

The Purchase

When purchasing line there are a couple of things you can do to ensure you are getting the freshest line possible. It may be a good idea to avoid spools of line coming from tackle store “bargain bins” or “end-of –season” clearance sales, unless you plan to use the line shortly after buying. Obviously, signs of age such as dust or faded packaging are things you want to avoid while browsing the line section of your local tackle shop. Clear line that has a flaky or cloudy appearance means the line is old or bad and definitely not worth your money. Purchasing your line from Eposeidon.com is one way to ensure you are buying fresh line, and will help you to avoid these problems. Every time you purchase a spool of line write the date of purchase on the packaging or spool with a permanent marker. This simple step will make it easy to remember the age of the line and tell you which spools should be used first, if you have multiple spools of the same line.

Storage

There are 3 things that you want to avoid when storing your spools of line: Heat, Humidity, and Light. Some lines can actually absorb moisture, so always store you line in a dry environment. Heat and light can cause the most problems. Extreme heat is to be avoided, so never leave your spools in your vehicle or boat on hot days. The temperatures that can be reached inside your car, truck, or boat can quickly ruin a spool of line. UV light exposure, even indirect, degrades line quality and weakens its strength. When you are not using your line, it is a good idea to store it in a dark, dry, and cool place. Areas such as basements and closets are much better options than garages or outside storage sheds.  When not fishing, my line is always kept in a large plastic storage box, covered by a cloth, on the shelf in my basement workshop. The lights are turned off the majority of the time and the temperature is a consistent 68-70 degrees.

These simple steps will keep your fishing line performing at is maximum potential. Line that is properly stored when not being used can last for several years. This will keep more money in your pocket and help you put more fish in your boat!
